A gas well at Pleasantville, a small borough in Venango County in northwestern Pennsylvania, places this view in the oil and gas country that grew up along Oil Creek after the 1859 Drake well near Titusville. By the early 1900s, natural gas from wells across the region was piped to nearby towns to heat homes and power factories, and drilling sites like this one were a familiar sight in the countryside. The date of about 1907 comes from an unverified caption card, so treat it as approximate. Look at the well structure and the bare ground around it for clues about how such operations were laid out.
