Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-born steel magnate and philanthropist, appears here in a portrait dated to about 1910, the period when he was giving away much of the fortune he made from American steel. He emigrated with his family as a boy in 1848 and rose from a telegraph messenger and railroad clerk to head the Carnegie Steel Company, which he sold to J.P. Morgan in 1901. By the time this portrait was made, he had committed himself to funding libraries, universities and peace organizations, and he is remembered above all for the public libraries he built across the United States and abroad. The record notes an unverified caption card, so the exact occasion for the sitting is not documented.
