Ludwig Uhland, the German poet, is shown here in an engraving whose caption card gives no date, so the image is best understood through the man it portrays. Born in Tübingen in 1787, Uhland became a leading figure of the Swabian school of Romantic poets, admired for ballads and lyrics drawn from medieval legend and folk tradition. He also worked as a scholar of German literature and language, and in 1848 he sat in the Frankfurt National Assembly, where he backed liberal constitutional reform. His reputation rested on verse that many Germans knew by heart throughout the nineteenth century.
