Ulrika Eleonora ruled Sweden for only a little over a year, from 1718, after the death of her brother, Charles XII, until 1720, when she gave up the crown to her husband, Frederick of Hesse. This engraving by Delannoy shows her as a sovereign at a difficult moment, when Sweden was exhausted by the Great Northern War. Her reign ended with a new constitution that shifted power toward the Riksdag, the Swedish parliament, which is worth noting for anyone interested in the country's constitutional history. The caption card records no date, so the print's exact making is uncertain.
