Here Queen Victoria appears not simply as ruler of Britain but as the "grand doyenne," the senior figure among Europe's sovereigns, as the title puts it. The print is a color halftone reproduction of a work by Charles Léandre, a Paris artist known for satirical portraits, and it was published in 1897 in *Musée des Souverains*. That year marked Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, sixty years on the throne, which made her one of the longest-serving monarchs of her era. Note how the artist places her among her royal contemporaries.
