Queen Victoria appears here as a steel engraving, a medium that let printmakers reproduce a portrait with fine, durable detail for large print runs. The likeness dates to about 1870, roughly three decades into a reign that began in 1837 and would last until her death in 1901. Johnson, Fry & Co., the publisher credited on the copyright line, produced engravings of this kind for a wide market of households eager to hang images of the sovereign on their walls. Steel plates held up far longer than copper under heavy printing, which is one reason so many such portraits survive today.
