Rather than honoring a single hero, this lithograph gathers a whole company of Irish notables under one heading, "The illustrious sons of Ireland," drawn by J. Donaghy and published in New York by Thomas Kelly around 1873. Its listed subjects, statesmen, clergy, authors and military officers, suggest how the publisher wanted the homeland's leading figures to read as a shared source of pride. Prints like this were made for the Irish immigrant community and their American-born children, who hung them in homes as both decoration and a statement of identity. Kelly's shop was one of several that sold such sentimental, patriotic images in the decades after the famine emigration.
