James Thomson, the Scottish poet whose long nature poem *The Seasons* made him one of the most widely read writers of his day, is the subject of this reproduction of a painting by William Aikman. Aikman, a Scottish portraitist who worked in London and died in 1731, painted the original during the years when Thomson's reputation was rising, so the source work likely dates from the 1720s. The caption card gives no date for the print, and its details are unverified, so the reproduction's own origin is uncertain. Thomson is also credited with the lyrics of "Rule, Britannia," which links his likeness to the patriotic culture of eighteenth-century Britain.
