Clarke, the Unitarian minister and writer who lived from 1810 to 1888, appears here in an engraving by A.H. Ritchie that presents him as a man of the pulpit and the page. He spent most of his career in Boston, where he led the Church of the Disciples and wrote widely on religion and reform, and he was a friend of Ralph Waldo Emerson and Margaret Fuller. The caption card gives no date, so the exact making of the print is unknown, but it stands as a record of a figure who helped shape liberal religious thought in nineteenth-century New England.
