Horatio Seymour (1810-1886) was a New York lawyer and politician who served as the state's governor and later ran for president as the Democratic nominee in 1868, losing to Ulysses S. Grant. This steel engraving records his likeness in the form that was common for public men of the mid-nineteenth century, when engraved portraits were widely reproduced in books, periodicals, and campaign material. The caption card gives no date for the print, so its exact origin is unknown, but the engraving style places it within the decades when such portraits circulated most widely.
