A Maryland lawyer who became one of the most combative figures of the early republic is the subject here, reproduced from a painting by David Edwin. Martin served as Maryland's attorney general for many years and attended the 1787 Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, though he left before it ended and later opposed the Constitution it produced. He was also known for his vigorous defense of Justice Samuel Chase during Chase's impeachment trial in 1805. The caption card gives Martin's dates as 1748? to 1826, and the question mark signals that his birth year is uncertain.
