Edmund Plowden, the Tudor lawyer shown here, is remembered today mainly through his law reports, the written accounts of court cases that English lawyers relied on for generations. He trained and practiced at the Middle Temple, one of the Inns of Court in London where barristers were educated. His *Commentaries*, a collection of reports published in the 1570s, made him one of the most respected common lawyers of Elizabeth's reign. This print reproduces a painting, but the record's details about the original work come from an unverified caption card, so the sitter's identity and the picture's date should be read with that in mind.
