The sitter here is Johann Forster, whose lifespan of 1495 to 1556 is given in the title, a German scholar of Hebrew who taught at Wittenberg in the circle of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon. That association places him among the Protestant humanists who worked to recover the Hebrew scriptures and make them available to students and clergy in the sixteenth century. The record does not give a date or the engraver, so the print's age and maker remain uncertain. Even so, the portrait form of the engraving reflects how scholars of this period were often commemorated, with their likenesses circulated in books and as single sheets.
