Few portraits of the period capture a sitter as directly as this reproduction of a painting does, and the record notes that the original's date and details are unverified. The sitter, Alessandro Farnese, was Duke of Parma and Piacenza and served as governor of the Spanish Netherlands from 1578 until his death in 1592. He is best remembered for retaking Antwerp in 1585 after a long siege, and for the army he assembled in Flanders for a planned invasion of England in 1588, which never sailed as intended. Portraits of him were widely circulated in Europe during his lifetime.
