The Highlanders Medley, or the Duke Triumphant" casts the 1746 victory over Scottish forces in the light of British political satire. Its title plays on the word "medley," a mixed assortment, and "the Duke" most likely refers to William, Duke of Cumberland, whose army defeated Charles Edward Stuart's Jacobite rising at Culloden in April 1746. British printmakers of the period often portrayed Highlanders as wild or foolish, and cartoons like this one were sold to a public eager for news of the campaign. The print's caption-card tags place it among British cartoons from 1745 to 1747, a period when the Jacobite threat dominated public debate.
