James Scott, the Duke of Monmouth, was the illegitimate son of Charles II, born in 1649, and he became one of the most popular men in England. In 1685 he led a rebellion against his uncle, James II, hoping to take the throne, but his forces were defeated at Sedgemoor that July, and he was executed on Tower Hill a few weeks later. The record gives no date for this plate, so it may reproduce an earlier portrait, a practice common in the *Universal Magazine*, an eighteenth-century British periodical that often printed engraved likenesses of notable figures.
