Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo (1856–1912) was among the most influential Spanish scholars of his day, known for his multivolume histories of Spanish literature and ideas and for his long leadership of the national library. This print reproduces a painting of him by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, the Valencian artist celebrated for his bright, open-air light and his skill as a portraitist. The record dates the image to 1908, the year Sorolla was at the height of his reputation in Spain and abroad. Reproductions like this one carried a painted likeness of a public figure to readers who would never see the original canvas.
