Taken in mid-June 1944, this print shows General Bernard Law Montgomery, who by then commanded the Allied ground forces in Normandy, about nine days after the D-Day landings. Montgomery had earned wide fame for his victory at El Alamein in 1942, and in 1944 he led the British, Canadian, and American armies fighting in France. The print was made by the U.S. Army Signal Corps, whose photographers documented Allied commanders and operations throughout the war. The date and other details come from a caption card that the Library of Congress notes has not been fully verified.
