John Manners, Marquis of Granby, is shown here in an engraving by H. Robinson after a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, a pairing that tells you a good deal about how portraits of soldiers circulated in the eighteenth century. Granby (1721–1770) was a senior British army officer and commander of the Royal Horse Guards, remembered for his leadership in the Seven Years' War, and his popularity made his likeness a natural subject for reproduction. Reynolds was the leading portrait painter in London at the time, and engravings after his work carried his reputation into print for buyers who could not afford the original canvas. The caption card gives no date, so the plate's exact publication year is uncertain.
