The caption identifies this picture as a record of American victims of the Lusitania, and its card is tagged with the U.S. flag. The British liner was torpedoed by a German submarine off the coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915, and nearly 1,200 people died, including 128 Americans. The sinking pressed the United States toward entering the First World War and sharpened debate over submarine attacks on passenger ships. The print belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, whose news photographs were often rushed into newspapers within days of the events they showed.
