Steamboats passing through the Hudson Highlands, the stretch of river where the water cuts between steep hills north of New York City, is the subject here. Currier & Ives issued this lithograph in New York in 1874, during the firm's long run of popular views of American river travel. The Hudson was among the busiest steamboat routes in the country, and by the 1870s its large side-wheel passenger boats carried city residents up the river for excursions and resort stays. The print is catalogued in Gale Research's Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, which makes it a useful reference for collectors tracing the firm's output of the period.
