Currier & Ives produced this hand-colored lithograph in New York in 1868, and it belongs to the firm's long run of rural scenes aimed at a middle-class audience that bought affordable prints for the parlor. Its title, "American Homestead Summer," places a farm household in the warm season, a subject the firm returned to often in the 1860s. The image is catalogued among the country-life and dwelling views of that decade, and the hand coloring, applied by workers after the lithographic stone printed the outlines, gave each copy its own tones of green and sky. Such prints reflected a national appetite for images of settled farm life during a period of rapid change after the Civil War.
