Spring opens the American Homestead series, a set of Currier & Ives lithographs that presented farm life across the seasons. Published in New York in 1869, this hand-colored sheet came from a firm that sold inexpensive images to a broad public, so its audience reached well beyond the cities where the company worked. Stencil coloring added the color to each impression, and that handwork gave the prints their warm, finished look. Viewers of the period often hung such scenes in parlors and kitchens as a picture of rural domestic life.
