Rather than a single scene, this 1709 print is a composite of older engravings, and the record tentatively credits Wenceslaus Hollar, Jacques Callot, John Sturt and others. Its title promises the country mirth of May Day, when village youths traditionally rose early to gather greenery, raised maypoles, and joined in dancing and games. Clergy and magistrates often viewed such celebrations with suspicion as occasions for rowdiness, and prints like this one tend to play on that tension between festivity and disorder. Its borrowed images also show how English publishers reused earlier continental work.
