Tree ferns of Australia, shown here as both mature specimens and younger plants, are the subject of this stereograph from the 1920s. Stereo cards like this one were made by companies such as Keystone View Co., which sold them in sets so that viewers could see distant places through a stereoscope, a hand viewer that merged two slightly offset images into a single three-dimensional scene. Tree ferns, with their tall, fibrous trunks and crowns of large fronds, were a popular sight for American audiences curious about the plant life of Australia's forests. The record's caption data is unverified, so the exact location is not confirmed.
