Coral divers on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, make an unusual subject for a stereograph, since the reef was far from most American viewers in the 1920s. The card was issued by Keystone View Company, a large American publisher that sold stereoviews of landscapes, cities and foreign places, which were viewed through a hand-held stereoscope to create a three-dimensional effect. The record dates the image to about 1924, though that date comes from an unverified caption card. Seen together, the pair of images would have given armchair travelers a sense of depth and distance beneath the water's surface.
