This print reproduces a portrait of Charles Edward Stuart, the grandson of the deposed King James II, by the Roman painter Pompeo Batoni. Charles Edward led the Jacobite rising of 1745, which tried to restore the Stuart line to the British throne and ended in defeat at Culloden in April 1746. He spent his later years in exile on the Continent, and Rome, where Batoni worked, was a center of the Jacobite court in exile. Reproductions like this one carried the likeness of the "Young Pretender" to a wider public, so the print reflects both the painter's art and the political interest in the Stuart cause.
