Hillsborough, on the San Francisco Peninsula, is the setting for this 1917 photograph of the Charles Templeton Crocker estate, and the caption cards tag it under gardens and fountains. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a Washington photographer who documented American gardens and country houses in the early twentieth century, made the picture. The Crocker family's wealth came from the railroad fortune of Charles Crocker, one of the Central Pacific's founders. Estates like this one, set in landscaped grounds south of the city, show how Bay Area fortunes were turned into formal gardens during the years before the First World War.
