Set in the Zarafshan district of Russian Turkestan, this view centers on a waterfall at Piandzhshambe Siab, a place whose name the title records as a cascade in a village, or *kysh*, a term for a winter settlement. The albumen print was made between 1865 and 1872 and appeared in the *Turkestanskii al'bom*, an album of photographs compiled under the Russian administration to document the region's peoples, landscapes and daily life. Its scene of running water and domestic life reflects the album's wider purpose of recording Central Asian communities as the empire expanded into the area.
