The title names a forge built around a machine for shoeing horses, a mechanical aid set against the hand labor that dominated Central Asian smithing. The print comes from the industry section of the *Turkestanskii al'bom*, a multi-part photographic survey compiled in 1871 and 1872 under Russian administration in Turkestan to document the region's peoples, crafts, and economy. Horses were essential to travel, trade, and the military across the region, so the work of shoeing them mattered. The albumen print, made within a few years of Russian expansion into Turkestan, gives a close view of tools and working conditions in a trade that the album's compilers considered worth recording.
