The title names the subject as Aba-bii, a former bek, or local governor, of Shakhrisabz, a city south of Samarkand that was the birthplace of Timur and a major center of the Timurid world. The photograph was made for the *Turkestanskii al'bom*, an album of portraits and views assembled by the Russian administration after its conquest of Central Asia, and its ethnographic section sorted the region's peoples into "types." Read today, the portrait is as much a record of how colonial officials classified and displayed local men as it is of the sitter himself, which makes its formal posing and its caption worth looking at closely.
