The coal office at Mytilēnē, on the island of Lesbos, is a rare view of a working commercial site rather than a harbor or a ship. Its caption appears in both Ottoman Turkish and French, and the print belongs to an album of sites across Turkey and Greece that is part of the Abdul-Hamid II Collection at the Library of Congress. Coal fueled the steamships that called at Aegean ports, so a depot like this one supported the maritime traffic of the island's harbor. The print dates from between 1880 and 1893.
