Loaded coal cars stand in a rail yard at Williamson, West Virginia, a town in the Tug Valley coalfields along the Kentucky border. The record places the photograph around 1941, though the date is marked as unverified on the original caption card. Coal was the economic engine of this part of the state, and railroad sidings like this one moved the fuel out to markets across the country. The picture comes from the Farm Security Administration and Office of War Information files, whose photographers documented American labor and industry in the years leading up to and during the Second World War.
