This stereograph shows a coal breaker in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the city at the heart of the state's anthracite region. Breakers were large wooden structures where mined coal was crushed and sorted by size, and they were often noisy, dusty places where boys worked picking slate and other impurities from the coal stream.
