The Sonali Masjid, or Golden Mosque, in Lahore is the subject here, and its name comes from the gilded decoration that once marked its domes and upper walls. William Henry Jackson made this photograph between February 8 and 11, 1895, while traveling with the World's Transportation Commission, which took him across Asia. Harper's Weekly printed the image as a halftone engraving later that year, and the print is valued today as a record of a Mughal-era building seen by a Western traveler at the close of the nineteenth century.
