This print shows Erwin Blask of Germany, whose caption card credits him with the silver medal in the hammer throw. The hammer throw was contested at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, where the German team competed before home crowds in the newly built Olympic Stadium. The image comes from an album of Olympic photographs by Leni Riefenstahl, the filmmaker who documented the Games for her film *Olympia*. Her photographs record the athletes' concentration and the rhythm of the throw itself, a sport that depended on balance and a sharp turn of the body.
