Published by S. W. Fores at 41 Piccadilly on April 1, 1828, this hand-coloured engraving by Thos Jones takes aim at the select vestries of London parishes, closed bodies of local officials who ran parish affairs. Its title, "Select vestry comforts," points to the perks such men enjoyed, which critics said were paid for out of the poor rates. Parish government was under scrutiny in the 1820s, and satirical prints like this one were a popular way for Londoners to voice suspicion of officials who seemed more interested in their own ease than in public service.
