Gillray's etching shows a Harlequin-style Quixote laying into a row of puppets, a joke aimed at the Pic Nic Society, a private London club known for its amateur theatricals. Published by Humphrey in April 1802, the print belongs to a long run of stage-based satires that Gillray turned on fashionable society. The coloured aquatint carries the sharp, crowded energy of his best work, and the pairing of a knight-errant with a harlequin's antics mocks both the pretensions of the performers and the stiff, puppet-like seriousness of the audience they wanted to impress.
