Whalers in open boats are shown closing in on a right whale, one of the animals that gave the nineteenth-century whaling trade its name for the "right" whale to hunt: slow, floating near shore, and rich in oil and baleen. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that produced hand-colored lithographs for a mass market from the 1830s into the early twentieth century, issued many such scenes of the whale fishery, and this one is catalogued in the Gale Research raisonné of their work. The print reflects a trade that powered the American economy for decades, with whale oil fueling lamps and baleen used in corsets and umbrella ribs. Its dramatic, romanticized view of the hunt was typical of the firm's appeal to buyers at home.
