Two named women anchor this group portrait of the officers of the Mothers' Congress, taken in Washington on February 7, 1897: Phoebe Apperson Hearst, third from right in the front row, and Letitia Green Stevenson, second from left, wife of Vice President Adlai Stevenson. The congress had been organized that same winter to bring mothers and educators together around child rearing and schooling, and it later evolved into the National PTA. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a prominent women photographer of the period, made the picture, and its formal arrangement shows how the organization presented itself in Washington society.
