The Georgetown Convent was home to the Visitation Sisters, a Catholic religious community that opened a school for girls in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington in the late 1700s, one of the oldest continuously operating institutions in the city. Frances Benjamin Johnston, a photographer who documented American buildings and daily life, made this view as part of her Washington work, and her large body of architectural photographs now forms a major part of the Library of Congress holdings. The record dates the print only to between 1890 and 1950, so the exact year is uncertain. The image still shows how a religious institution and its grounds presented themselves to the public in that era.
