Here the subject is named in the title itself: John C. Frémont, the Republican Party's first presidential nominee, shown during the 1856 campaign. Frémont had earned the nickname "the Pathfinder" for his surveys of western routes, and his fame as an explorer made him a recognizable national figure. The party opposed the spread of slavery into the territories, and although Frémont lost to James Buchanan, his strong showing helped set the stage for Abraham Lincoln's victory in 1860. Campaign images like this one were meant to put a familiar face before voters.
