Set in the icy waters off Greenland, this etching with engraving shows the whale fishery at work, with boats and hunters pursuing whales across the northern seas. European fleets from Britain, the Netherlands and elsewhere worked these Arctic grounds from the 1600s onward, drawn by whale oil for lamps and whalebone for corsets and other goods. The record gives no date, so the print is best read as a general view of that northern industry rather than a record of a single voyage.
