A young doffer, a worker who pulled full bobbins from spinning frames and replaced them with empty ones, stands at Globe Mills in Augusta, Georgia. Augusta's textile mills drew on the cotton grown across the surrounding region, and many mills of this era hired children for jobs like doffing because their small size let them reach between machines. The picture comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a body of commercial photographs taken in the early twentieth century. Its record dates it only to a range between 1909 and 1932, but it belongs to the broader documentation of child labor in Southern mills.
