Few sea fights of the American Revolution were as dramatic as the night battle off Flamborough Head on England's Yorkshire coast, where John Paul Jones's *Bonhomme Richard* grappled with Captain Richard Pearson's British frigate *Serapis* on September 23, 1779. The print reproduces a painting by the British marine artist Richard Paton, but it was engraved in Augsburg, a German city, years after the action, which shows how widely the story circulated in Europe. Its French title points to the same audience. Although the *Bonhomme Richard* sank after the fight, Jones took the *Serapis*, and the battle made him a celebrated figure on both sides of the Atlantic.
