The Via Appia is one of the most famous roads of ancient Rome, begun in 312 B.C. under the censor Appius Claudius Caecus to connect the city with the southeast coast. This engraving reproduces a painting by Boulanger, rendered by the engraver Gautier, and was published in New York by M. Knoedler around 1880. The record notes that its data comes from an older shelflist card and has not been verified, so the dates and attributions should be checked before being relied on. Even so, the subject reflects the enduring fascination of nineteenth-century artists and audiences with the monuments of classical antiquity.
