Villagers of Gonesse, a farming town north of Paris, rush toward a balloon that has come down in their fields in this hand-colored etching. Issued in Augsburg in 1783, the print credits Montgolfier's hot-air balloon, but the craft that landed at Gonesse in late August of that year was a hydrogen balloon built by Jacques Charles and the Robert brothers. The episode, in which locals attacked the unfamiliar machine, shows how quickly ballooning moved from Paris salons into the countryside and how alarming it seemed to people who had never seen one.
