Garnerin's parachute descent from the Parc de Monceau in Paris sets this print apart. Its title dates the flight to 1 Brumaire, year 6 of the revolutionary calendar, or 22 October 1797, when he rose beneath a free balloon and drifted down under a canopy. The credit line names Dietrich, and the wood engraving was likely made between 1860 and 1900, long after the event, as a retrospective image. Garnerin's descent was among the first documented parachute jumps from a balloon, and the print is preserved in Gaston Tissandier's collection, which reflects later French interest in early aeronautics.
