*Polk's dream* is an 1846 New York lithograph signed with the monogram of Edward Williams Clay and published by James Baillie. It caricatures President James K. Polk alongside James Buchanan, George Bancroft, Robert J. Walker, and the British diplomat R. Pakenham, and it turns on the Oregon question. Polk had campaigned in 1844 on claiming the territory up to latitude 54 degrees 40 minutes, but the dispute was settled at the 49th parallel in June 1846, months after this print was deposited for copyright.
