Pencil and Chinese white on green paper set this drawing apart from other views of Harpers Ferry: it shows a cave near the town that is tied to John Brown, the abolitionist who used hideouts in the surrounding hills while planning his October 1859 raid on the federal armory. The record also tags the scene with African Americans and a railroad, a reminder that the Baltimore and Ohio line ran through the town and that the raid's aftermath and the Civil War later drew the community into national events. Harpers Ferry changed hands several times during the war, which made it a frequent subject for soldiers and artists in the early 1860s. The sheet's date range places it during that period, when Brown's raid was still fresh in public memory.
